For the seventh consecutive year, the beloved turtle of the World Slow Art Day visits MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and invites art lovers to a different museum experience.According to researches, the average viewing time of an artwork is approximately 29’’. We will try to observe a photograph for 10’! It may seem to be difficult, and it is special without a doubt, but we have attempted it and we have succeeded in doing so, all of us who have participated in the Museum’s corresponding action in recent years, every first Sunday of April. Steps to our visit:We receive a specific form and viewing instructions from the Museum’s Reception. We observe some of the selected artworks of the current exhibition “About Human”, where the SlowArt-turtle has…stopped. EXTENSION: Until January 5, 2025 How many stories can one find in a museum? How many stories create, compose a museum and lead it to a next page? Works of art, large and small collections, large sets of donations or private donations, people of many professions, the institution itself, even the building itself, all the above "speak" and "suggest" their own stories in the case of the new exhibition of the MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art entitled "From now on. Stories for a next tomorrow" which will be presented at the museum, in Thessaloniki, from 24 May to 17 November, 2024. After all, there are many stories; initially those by the 100 artists participating in the exhibition and eventually even more. Opening: Friday 17 May 2024, 20:00 The #MeToo movement, feminist strikes, feminist demands for the eradication of gender violence often stand in various ways under the spotlight lately, very often in a tragic way. Additionally, although female artistic creation and the feminist approach to the arts do not necessarily constitute a new or innovative research perspective in the 21st century, however, and for various reasons, historically, this perspective does not seem to be a priority in the research and critique of artistic fields.  In the wake of these international debates on gender and identities and the general trend of exploring women's creative work, the new exhibition-production by MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography under the title “HerStories. Photographic practices, 1974-2024” seeks to showcase the domestic photographic production of women, from the 1970s onwards. The exhibition will be hosted in the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography and the Experimental Center for the Arts of MOMus, from 17 May until 15 September 2024; forty artists and photographers, four curators and eight researchers contribute in mapping this particular field of endeavor for the first time in Greece. The exhibition is structured in three complementary narratives that seek to cover the multiple and complex dimensions of women's photographic practices over these five decades: the approaches to issues of women's identity regardless of whether they were self-determined as "feminist" or not, the representations of social and political realities through documentary photography, and the explorations of the photographic medium itself through works that are often highly experimental in nature. Integrating these three narratives, the exhibition aims to display the diverse and dynamic contribution of women in the field of photography: it presents the complexity of the female experience, the socio-political context in which they operate, and the innovative artistic ideas they use. A bilingual edition accompanies the exhibition and functions as a supplement, focused on the history of women's photographic creation in Greece from the 19th century to the Metapolitefsi period (meaning change of regime), with texts by scholars in the field. In addition, the 5th International Conference “Fast Forward” <a>under the title “Hidden (Hi)stories: New Perspectives of Women’s Photographies</a>” will take place in Thessaloniki, from 17 until 19 May 2024, at the “Xanthippi Hoippel” amphitheater at MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art (TIF-Helexpo premises) in Thessaloniki, co-organised by the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the University for the Creative Arts, and the University of Sunderland. We are invited -young and old- in a journey of memory and tradition entitled “Memories in a frame. Imperishable memories from perishable wedding photos” which will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, 12:00-13:30, at MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography (Warehouse A, Pier A, Thessaloniki port area). In the workshop of the same name that preceded it, men and women aged 65+ used wedding photos to highlight personal and family stories, stories that are sweet, unpredictable, funny and even tragic, which will be offered like… little delights at the event at the Museum. Through old wedding photographs we discover the lives behind the images, the loves, the expectations, the secrets and the truths of each era, while the narratives will be accompanied with music and songs. Living words, narration and music are here to prove that memories remain indestructible even when the photographs fade. The action is implemented within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU. He studied architecture in Thessaloniki and did postgraduate studies in Edinburgh, Scotland (College of Art, School of Architecture, Herriot-Watt University). He lives and works in Thessaloniki. He is Emeritus Professor of scenography in the School of Drama of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). As an architect, he deals with issues related to the view of the theater space, its technical characteristics, form and function. Since 1981 he has collaborated as a scenographer with theater organizations and theater troupes in Greece and abroad. His scenographic works have been presented at the festivals of Epidaurus, Athens, Dimitria, etc. He has collaborated with the National Theatre, the National Theatre of Northern Greece, the Greek National Opera. He has collaborated with the Municipal and Regional Theatres of Kalamata, Patras, Larissa, Volos, Kavala and Veria, with the Greek Art Theatre Karolos Koun, the Experimental Art Theater in Thessaloniki and other troupes in the region as well as with private troupes in Athens. In 2003 he was the curator of the Greek participation in the Prague Quadrennial for Scenography, which received a special honor "for the quality of the presentation". For his work, he received several distinctions both in Greece and abroad. For his overall work, he was honored by the study and research center of the Hellenic Theatre and the Theatre Museum with the Panos Aravantinos prize. He has at times served as President of the National Theatre of Northern Greece (1995-97), of the School of Drama of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the AUTh (1997-99 and 2003-05), Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the AUTh (2000-03), and President of the School of Film (2006-07). He was a member of the Advisory Committees of the Greek Ministry of Culture on grants for the independent theater. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Center for Theater and Dance, involved in the operation of the Municipal and Regional Theatres.

Notes on the Art and Technique of Scenography” | Thursday 30 January 2025, 18:00-20:30 The technique of scenography "takes the lead" in the exhibition entitled "Scenes made of paper" as well as in the two-volume illustrated encyclopedic dictionary of Apostolos Fokion Vettas, emeritus professor of scenography at the Drama School of the Faculty of Arts of AUTh, and in the end it becomes clear that it was the main protagonist and love of the same, during his life. The inter-artistic dimension of scenography (theater, speech, movement, visual arts, sound, architecture) as well as the possibilities arising from every form of applied art compose a special, new, malleable, constructivist backdrop in the exhibition in question, in MOMus-Museum of Modern Art-Costakis Collection in Thessaloniki, from 30 January until 23 March 2025. Small drawings of bulls, bullfighters, picadors or other scenes of the arena, the love for the Mediterranean, the love and the nostalgia for the homeland, the solidarity for the fellow fighter and (co)exiled compatriot, important political interventions and artistic gestures of great spontaneity, all seen through the long-time correspondence of two very good friends, Pablo Picasso and Eugenio Arias, are the main axes of the new, international exhibition of the MOMus-Museum of Modern Art-Costakis Collection entitled "Pablo Picasso: Exile and Nostalgia". The exhibition, coproduced by the Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Málaga, will be presented from 12 July to 10 November 2024 at the MOMus-Museum of Modern Art, in the Moni Lazariston in Thessaloniki, and focuses on Pablo Picasso's long-standing and multi-dimensional friendship with the barber and friend of Eugenio Arias, exiled resistance fighter. Through the correspondence of the two men, the turbulent period of the civil war in Spain and the period after that (1936-1952), such as the ties with the French Resistance and the illegal Communist Party of Spain, is illuminated in an extremely special way. The exhibition “Pablo Picasso: Exile and Nostalgia” features drawings, prints and ceramics from the collections of the Museo Casa Natal de Picasso in Malaga, many of which are being exhibited for the first time outside of Spain. This is MOMus-Museum of Modern Art major collaboration for 2024, as part of its effort to network with international museums and institutions holding collections of seminal European avant-garde art movements.   The story of a friendship – A museum’s collection. Pablo Picasso met Eugenio Arias in Vallauris, Southern France where Arias had fled as a left-wing political exile from Franco's regime and was working as a barber. Shortly after Eugenio Arias died, his family found a bundle of pages from the Spanish right-winged and monarchic ABC newspaper where Picasso left signs on the fringes of bullfighting chronicles together with drawings alluding to the toros and with the surname "Arias" handwritten, a call to the recipient of such a particular correspondence. It is a group of more than 60 pages of a friendly correspondence between two aficionados, made between 1962 and 1968.  This collection was kept in the family home of the barber's heirs until, in 2016, Madeleine and Pauline Arias visited the Documentation Centre of the Picasso’s Birthplace Museum (Museo Casa Natal Picasso) in Malaga and, the following year, they decided to deposit an important collection of drawings, engravings, illustrated books and other materials. This collection was kept in the family home of the barber's heirs until, in 2016, Madeleine and Pauline Arias visited the Documentation Centre of the Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Malaga and, the following year, they decided to deposit an important collection of drawings, engravings, illustrated books and other materials. The collection was accompanied by a copy of the book Dibujos y escritos, written by Picasso and published in 1961 by Camilo José Cela, a Spanish writer awarded in 1989 with the Nobel Prize of Literature. This copy was personalized by the painter in 1966 as a birthday gift for his friend Eugenio. Among its pages there are two inscriptions and 35 pages enhanced with drawings, arabesques and decorative strokes with felt-tip pen. Featuring the impressive Bearded man, a classic-looking male face painted by the the artist with circular coloured strokes as if they were beard hairs. A very suitable gift for the barber friend. These drawings are presented for the first time outside of Spain. In the set there are also important illustrated books like Sueño y mentira de Franco (1937), that is complemented in this exhibition with other publications that reflect the artist's involvement and solidarity with the Spanish people, as he used his poems and illustrations to fight against Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. With his resistance literature and his illustrations he helped well known resistants and antinazi poets and writers, like Paul Eluard or Robert Desnos to spread the cause. For the first time, two surrealistic poems by Picasso are published in Greek, translated by Androula Michael. The collection is completed with photographs, engravings and lithographs from the Museo Casa Natal Picasso collection, that contextualise and give an image of the artist's love for bulls and the Mediterranean world, a paradise that he was able to recover in Vallauris, on the Côte d'Azur, after the end of the Second World War. WORLD’S FIRST RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITIONA fully detailed and documented retrospective-exhibition on the work and life of Anna Andreeva (1917-2008), the Soviet textile designer who worked in the design collective at the Red Rose Silk Factory in Moscow from the 1940s to the 1980s, is the core narration line of the upcoming exhibition under the title “Collective Threads: Anna Andreeva at the Red Rose Silk Factory”. Named after the German revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg, the Red Rose Silk Factory was a site of collective female design labor that shaped the fashion and material culture of late Socialism. The exhibition showcases the abstract, geometric, cosmic, space-age, and cybernetic patterns of Andreeva, highlighting her as an individual talent whose inventiveness often soared above the work of her comrades, and who sometimes had to find ways to elude the censoring glare of Party authorities. At the same time, the exhibition spotlights Andreeva as a successful and enthusiastic participant in the planned economy of Soviet Union during the Cold War, also displaying designs that reflected the demands of the planned economy for popular, traditional and patriotic themes, and works made for state commissions to commemorate historic events, such as cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first manned space flight in 1961 and the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. The exhibition includes Andreeva’s drawings, sketches, and historic fabric samples, as well as photographs, film clips and other documentary materials from the Red Rose Factory collective, Soviet fashion magazines and exhibitions. It is complemented by large-scale contemporary reproductions of Andreeva’s textiles that viewers are invited to touch. The exhibition presents Andreeva's work in dialogue with the Russian avant-garde from the Costakis collection of MOMus-Museum of Modern Art. Collective Threads: Anna Andreeva at the Red Rose Silk Factory

Opening: Thursday 27 March, 19:00 The paintings and sculptural compositions of Dimitris Fragakis, featuring swimmers, which are presented in the exhibition alongside other works of his, form a major body of his work. The atmosphere in these compositions is grotesque, dark, and timeless, with strong and extreme distortions, unnatural and exaggerated scales, while the surreal, otherworldly element takes center stage as the figures emerge and submerge, float, brace themselves or take the great "plunge" into the water, the liquid element. Or perhaps not just into water, but into the uncharted depths of existence, where they confront both terror and ecstatic wonder as they face the unknown. Through his compositions, Dimitris Fragakis reaffirms the quality of pure artistic values that define his work, heightens the symbolic power of his imagery in a fragmented, alienated and homogenizing era, and asserts his vital relationship with the world, raising existential and ontological questions, invoking a deeper form of communication. The great "dive" has begun: A plunge into the world, into life, into the unknown. Dimitris Fragakis' exhibition is the first exhibition hosted at Case Studio, in the rotunda of MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art. Case Studio is the latest initiative of the museum: an exhibition space dedicated to presenting the here-and-now of contemporary art. Its goal is showcasing both emerging and established artists, while fostering a closer connection between the museum and contemporary creative practices. Featuring solo exhibitions and projects by contemporary artists ‒primarily, though not exclusively‒, by creators who are based in or originating from Thessaloniki alongside a variety of collective projects, Case Studio highlights alternative narratives and innovative models of knowledge production, promoting the values of social progress and empowerment. Curated by: Yannis Bolis, Art Historian, MOMus Curator  Born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1982, Dimitris Fragakis graduated in 2006 from the School of Engineering Sciences at the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Kavala.
