ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
The painting composition "Early Spring" is a typical example of Alkis Pierrakos' painting. A work of the artist's mature period, who after a long period of intense experimentation, multiple and broader quests remains faithful to the painting process as expression, incorporating curved and diagonal themes, impetuous twisting brushstrokes, bold abstract formations, expressionistic contrasts into the painting surface. The fluidity, but above all the density of the colour material, creates relief surfaces with the movement and the path of the brush across the pictorial field evident.
CREATOR
Alkis Pierrakos was born in 1920 in Thessaloniki. He lived outside Greece until 1938, and after the war he travelled to Europe. He studied in Switzerland, at the Gewerbeschule in Basel (1948-1952) and in London, at the Slade School of Fine Arts and the Central School of Arts and Crafts. In 1953-54 he lived in Germany, where he came into contact with the quest for expressionism. In 1954 he moved to Paris, where he lived and worked for most of his life, and from 1980 he spent long periods of time in Oxylithos, Evia. He was a founding member and coordinator of the group 'Le Ligne et le Signe'.
